1. The timely arrival of the serious rain during lunch led to the wise decision not to go out on No. 3 in the afternoon as per plan (although that is maybe not the most appropriate term - see Lowlight 1 below.)

2. About to retire mein host, John, at the Visitors’ clubhouse marching Watters out by the collar on account of unauthorised usage of mobile phone.

3. Production by the catering staff of coffee and bacon rolls for 14 at very short notice (see Lowlight 1 again)

1. Arrival of most of the company before the “organiser” to find that no arrangements whatever had been made for catering.  This followed failure to advise company of starting time.

2. For those unlucky enough to have lingered, hearing a speech delivered by a former Gullane Captain to thank Alison and John, the retiring caterers, which, while having the eponymous individuals standing at one end of the long table like a couple of menials facing a court, managed to fail to include a single complimentary (or any other kind) of comment about them, but did manage to include a lengthy list of golfing quotes and questions, already known to the entire company, which had been dredged up from the internet.

Lowlights

We should have been at Goswick to-day.  The only highlight was that, as of this date, no Freen or family member appears to have contracted the virus.

Massive lock-down all over the country.

Highlights

Lowlights

1.  We are back!  After a seriously disrupted Summer the Freens hit the road again and, in light of the weather, it was considered a great idea to have arranged to hold the Winter outing in August.

2.  A George Washington moment from Mr. Rees - on the 3rd hole in the afternoon he hit a pitch from about twenty yards out.  It landed about five feet from the hole, bounced twice and went clean into the hole.  Unfortunately, on account of Covid, the holes had sponges in them and David’s ball hit the sponge and bounced out, finishing a couple of feet away.  He refused to take the two that was offered on the grounds that it would also have been a birdie ferret.

3.  Having two competitions running was a great feature with only Bob and Phil not taking part.  It was very closely fought at both the top and bottom of the leaderboard.

4.  Very friendly staff and members.  We were the first outing they had had this year.

1.  DP turned by a Paige.  At the 16th and hitting his 3rd shot to about 5 yards from the pin, in endeavouring to replicate the voluptuous lady’s flop, he thinned it and finished with an 8 - lesson learned?  Doubtful.
