Arbroath

26th March

Weather: Fine spring day

Something of a find - excellent value at a good James Braid designed course.  JM triumphed and won a fine Arbroath Artisans' Golf Club jersey which has joined the great wall of China in being rumoured to be the only other man made artefact visible from space.

Excellent lunch with smokies all round. Attendance of guest, John Crerar Discovery of congenial harbourside pub in the evening. Sitting beside Arbroath harbour on a balmy March evening eating fish/pudding suppers. None really.

Weather: A fine day for our last of the weekend.

American style course which has hosted a number of European Tour events provided a stern teat for jaded Freens, but, this allowed the cream to rise to the top and DL won the day.  Highlights seem a bit thin forhere - any memories anyone?

Dick and Doug Mulholland both being driven out of their minds, and rooms, by the snoring of John and Graeme respectively then trying to sleep in the corridor and finally giving up to roam the streets of Cork.

A notable occasion.  The Freens’ first visit to the southern part of the Emerald Isle by air.  Another bonus was the arrival of two new Canucks in addition to Bomber and Graeme.  A big Freens’ welcome to Richard King (By Appointment angling tutor to Seve Ballesteros and soon to be known to all of us as Freddie Couples for reasons both visual and golfing!) and Doug Mulholland (a proper golfer, but a great guy.)

According to the recently revealed notebook “the weekend started with a bang with Phil scooping the pool following a phenomenal p.m. round which included an eagle 2 an the 2nd hole” which is all very well, but you will notice that the table below - which also appears in the book - doesn’t include Phil at all!

AND - can anyone recall why the p.m. Scores were so much lower than the morning’s?

Weather: Very wet.

This was an unusual outing because the wet weaher of previous days meant that the morning round was cut to nine holes.  It was remarkable for the fact that it ended DJ’s 3 year winning streak

Weather: A dull but dry day.

A Pay-and-Play course providing a gentle afternoon’s exercise for Freens to recharge batteries in anticipation of the evening.  There was also a notable victory for a popular guest, Jimmy Litterick, (spelt “xxxx” per CW at next A.G.M.)

Lowlights

It’s appreciated that this is not “normal”, but it would be a dereliction of duty if these photos from Isaacs’ Hotel were not published here!

Highlights

Weather: Sunny, occasional showers

Very windy

In a closely fought contest JM triumphed by a stroke from JR and DP with an even more obscenely high score than at our last outing.  This takes his season's tally to three wins out of a possible four - a striking testament to the paucity and poverty of the rest of the field.  Course very playable, with excellent greens, but wet, so there was little carry and the playing length was between 6,500 to 6,700 yards.  Not perfect conditions for Freens, especially with howling gale.

Cardrona

Juggy never does things by halves - obviously a precious ball!!

Seeing two Lazari buzzing about the course in a buggy with one of them on a final warning not to grump. Juggy's now legendary difficulty with caddy cars reasserting itself with a nasty prang on leaving the 8th tee.

7th May

Silloth

Weather:  Absolutely brilliant

In spite of an uncharacteristic (never before seen by Ed.) Topped tee shot into the heather from the 2nd tee Doog sneaked through on the home straight to steal the laurels from Ed.., But both failed to shine in the morning or afternoon and were eclipsed by the radiance of Collin and Robin respectively.

Highlights

Lowlights

Dereliction of duty by Hon. Sec. who left the country without thought for fellow Freens and without leaving the matrix. Sad deflation of Collin in the afternoon. Poorish turnout of Freens on account of distance Collin's eagle at the 17th. Wonderful course in excellent condition.  Fantastic display of whins in full bloom.. Attendance of guest, Chris Price
