Organising cock-up!

1. Once more this is an easy one.  On account of the terrible booking balls-up, contributed to by the organiser who merely mentioned to the secretary when booking the possibility of some of us not wanting to play two rounds, the fact that we only had two times for the afternoon.  This brought forth the noble and Captain Oates like spirit of the six Freens who volunteered to miss the afternoon round.

2. Catering was excellent.

1.  See above.  The organisation was a disaster.  On the plus side, the weather was good.

Normal Service Resumed?

Weather: Windy, but dry

Winner: A.M. (and day, of course): KC

1. JM returned safely from Mexico, but took himself and Mrs. M. off to Ballachulish that day and so missed the outing.

2. Fine performance by Kenny to win the day by a point from our young thruster!  This was a particularly fine effort  in view of Kenny being regaled by stories from Barney concerning Catherine the Great’s reputed equine-related death and Psycho’s, no doubt impeccably researched, stories concerning Nicola Sturgeon, Lorna Slater, Peter Murrell and Patrick Harvie.

1.  There is only one contender here and it’s not related to golf.  This was the day after Putin launched his invasion of Ukraine.  It was a strange feeling to be playing a round of golf knowing what barbarities were being committed at that time on the continent.  If only Putin had restricted his invasive tendencies to his earlier attempt on East Lothian in 1991 as aide to the Mayor of Leningrad - see below.

Carnwath

22nd July

13 attendees, inc one guest( Collin’s ex brother in law, Alan)

Highlights were….

1. Barney calling off the day before with a bad back/forward glance at the weather forecast.(?)

2. Psycho telling all that Boris Johnson hadn’t told a single lie that mattered whilst PM and that Tony Blair was the worst PM in history.   Also Nicola Sturgeon is a Marxist. Indeed he believes that there are only two types of political persuasions.   You’re either a Marxist or a Capitalist. No middle ground in the political

landscape of Psycho!   Thank god no one mentioned the recent abnormally hot weather to him.

3. Bob, Juggy and Smithy made a pre round strike on the pie shop and bought stocks for themselves and the Covid stricken Runce. They also confessed to eating a pie between said shop and the golf course. No mean feat at 8.30 am and also given that the distance between the two is about 400 yards.  After lunch several more Freens also visited the pie shop to sample the pastry encased delights.

4.  One final thing worthy of note is that several Freens when at the clubhouse bar asked for a John Panton. This was met with a blank look from the barman. When it was explained to him what the drink consisted of he said “ Aah, a Rock Shandy”!    Obviously John Panton’s fame hasn’t spread to South Lanarkshire.

A very enjoyable half day outing and at a bargain basement price of £5 for those that had played last year and £20 for those that hadn’t, including breakfast and lunch!!!   Collin’s organisational skills were widely

commended and it was put to him that he cancel his planned trip to Oz and take on the role on a

full time basis. His response to this proposal was firmly in the negative.

Weather: Cloudy, but dry, with little wind.

1. When most of Scotland was sere and yellow the greenery of the place was striking (and indicative of a different weather pattern?)

More phone notes here, looking for expansion -

Runce doing a Robin before PM round     Collin leaving for Oz    Juggy’s tee shot on the last (I know this one - it was so far to the right it was almost in West Lothian, but it was found smack in the middle of the fairway.)

One group (who will be nameless, aoart from me) played 19 holes in the afternoon by dint of playing the 6th hole again instead of the 12th and having to retrace their steps (but didn’t delay the match behind????)

There is a reference to and “excited chef” ?????

24th September

Another wee gem!

Weather: A beautiful sunny late afternoon

Winner: No idea.  Who cares?

This exploratory trip was well justified by the discovery of a really fun wee course.  There was an appreciative sound from the whole contingent as we rounded a bend in the track to see the course below us.  It really was a mixed and quirky delight of which you might get some idea from the pictures.

Surely we can do better than just this picture?

Looks like JM is admiring a rear view.

Who was the victim? Bob?

So guess who found a few balls.

And where was he to find them?
