Highlights

Lowlights

1. Seeing Big Doog’s face wreathed in smiles at the end of the day even after being asked to hand over £30 for the privilege of playing over his own course!

2. Two nearest the pins by Johnny Gill in the morning helping him to a narrowly won second place.

3. Four twos by Juggy in the course of the day.

1. Call off by Dr, Bob on account of golfing injury.

2. Failure to appear by Hon Sec. on account of his having left the country to supervise the stashing of some cash in the British Virgin Islands.

3. Failure by webmaster to remember Juggys’ four twos, although playing with him all day.  To be fair to webmaster this may have been down to Juggy’s self-declared grumpiness on the day, on account of there being a particularly fine example of PBFUmeisterness by the great man!

Lowlights

1. Jock and passenger, DL, must take pride of place here.  At 8.20 they were 2 miles from Lanark, but uncertain as to location of golf club so Jock’s SatNav was summoned to help by DL.  When asked whether he wished to add previous destination DL replied in the affirmative.  Twenty minutes later the realisation dawned that the Sat Nav was taking them to the golf club via Dunbar.  They arrived at 9.00.

2. Excellent course, very welcoming club and very good value

1. Re 1, above - why did Jock have Dunbar entered in his SatNav as a destination?  Can he not find his way there by now?

2. Table becoming a flood plain at lunch time with yet another beer incident.

3. TT divot at 12th - does anybody have the faintest clue what that brief note might mean?

Weather: A bright, pleasant day all day

Winners: Morning – Juggy  ; Afternoon – DP ; Day – DP

Highlights

Lowlights

1. A very interesting course in a beautiful location on a good day - what could be better?  All that could improve it would be good food and excellent service - which is exactly what we got.  Up wi’ the Souters!

2. Positive approach by DJ with satisfied exclamation of “That’s fine” as his tee shot at the 3rd  presages Jordan Spieth’s poor imitation at Birkdale a few weeks later’

3. The look on Jock’s face when he learns that the only unit of the afternoon round has just earned him £22!

4. Notification being given by JM that Jack’s Thimble has been returned “anonymously.”

None noted.

Winners: Morning –  Digger; Afternoon –  Barney; Day – Barney

Highlights

Lowlights

1. By a resounding majority the venue was regarded as a very good course in excellent condition.

2. Supply of additional sarnies on request at lunchtime

1. The weather - see below!

2. The need to request additional sarnies at lunchtime

3. The fact that 6 months advance notice was insufficient to allow some Freens to avoid double booking themselves and having to leave after one round or not appear at all!

4. More specifically the Freen who proposed the venue to actually arrange a holiday and leave the country - see below!

Unseemly practising by certain Freens before play

Juggy still thinking there might be a point available at the 3rd

A Freenly greeting from Freen who proposed venue and who, on the day, was in meltdown in Czecho!

….but the course had lots to recommend it

….it was wet!

Highlights

1.  An excellent venue in great condition on a beautiful day.  What more could we ask for?

2. The answer to the question above is, the return to action of our bionic man - Wardrobe Wood - see action photo below.

3.  Return of full complement of Canucks including, in particular, Richard, who has been away too long.

4.  Great effort by Paddy Hart (or was it weakness in the face of Muir threats?) to make the numbers up to the perfect twenty.

5.  This was actually in Brora in the evening, but Psycho’s instant correction to JM’s assertion in his “speech” that “Tomorrow starts at 9.30” with the statement - “No, it doesn’t.  It starts just after midnight.”

6.  Last, but assuredly not least, Allan’s celebration of his Golden Wedding away from the bosom of his family.  How did he do it?

Lowlights

1.  Having achieved the, not particularly taxing, goal of reaching Tain without apparent mishap, Dave Runciman’s subsequent extreme and time consuming difficulties in finding his way out of the Asda car park.

2. It is believed there was an unseemly argument on the 1st tee, but the details remain elusive.  Any better memories?

1. Richard being the first to discover the the information he had been given to the effect that it was impossible to lose  a ball at Brora may have been defective.

2. Imposition of a Texas scramble in the afternoon just as the webmaster was running into form.

3. Unusual occurrence of a penalty shot for webmaster’s team in said Texas scramble on account of failure to remember  existence of burn on the 11th hole.

1. The weather is worth a mention here, but competition for first spot is fierce and the piece of golfing land that is Brora and the course condition have to claim first place here - a magnificent venue in great condition.

2. Excellent winning round from David Lindsay.

3. I know that some might consider this a lowlight (but not Mrs. P.), But the notable absence of the waitress encountered on our last visit cannot go unmentioned

1. The only purely Fortrosian lowlight was the fact that eight of our number did not play.  The East Lothian Four scuttled off home in what seems to be starting to become an established weekend habit.  Psycho left with passenger DL in order to see daughter.  Johnny Gill decided that a mad dash home in order to try to see the Toon snatch a home draw with Liverpool while Allan was marched off to participate in Golden Wedding celebrations refrred to earlier.

2. This is not Fortrose specific, but a mention has to be made somewhere of the unfortunate incident on the A9 in relation to which reports differ in certain subtle respects, but all agree that the incident culminated in Phil being nicked for speeding - dear, dear.  The missing Johnny D. Could have shown him a thing or two when it comes to speeding.  Speaking of whom, his absence should also be recorded as a weekend lowlight.

3. A major lowlight, not known at the time, was that Jock was apparently working in lowlight on account of having a detached retina.  The latest news is that this has been treated successfully and the great man has since been spotted back on the golf course!

1. Guest appearance by Mrs. Oliver, taking a brief break from her Golden Wedding celebrations.

2. Positive outlook and obvious moral fibre shown by the doughty dozen who chose to ignore the slight precipitation before play commenced and so had a fine day to round off the weekend

3. Comment by waitress who had just served a fine dessert to one of our company and who, on being asked by Colin Wwhat has he got that we haven’t got?” Answered “A tart” - quick and accurate.

Two welcome sights for

the price of one!

Our recent émigré didn’t make the trip, but all was not lost

It really wasn’t a bad day, was it?
