Southerness

31st March

Weather:  Mild and calm for time of year.

This was in many ways a typical Freens outing.  The weather on the way down was terrible.  It poured all the way to Dumfries where we started to enter our own weather bubble that stayed with us for almost the entire day before we drove home in hellish wet weather.

An amazing first round from JM saw him take the morning by a mile and a second also in the 70s clearly froze the field, so he cantered to a comfortable win (but he still has his critics).

Weather: Absolutely beautiful with light, steady breeze from south east

Morning won by DP with steady gross 78, but he couldn't maintain the pace and although guest, Jeff, won the afternoon it was Robin who came up on the inside to snatch the prize for the day.

Weather:  Very pleasant Summer day.

Stunning morning round by Bob W - chanceless gross 71.  Thankfully for the rest of the field he had to leave after lunch and so allowed DJR to triumph in the afternoon and for the day.

Highlights

Weather:  Difficult to say - recollection probably affected by memories of the course and surroundings - suggests it was miserably wet for a good part of the day and so-so otherwise

"What's in a name?" - a good deal if this is anything to go by, but that didn't deter Doog who followed on this year's pattern of gross winning scores in the 70s with a fine 72.  This was too hot a pace for him to maintain in the afternoon, however, and Mr. Steady himself (see Montrose), Robin, stole in for the afternoon and the day with his second net 70.

Weather: Very cold to start, with pockets of mist lying on various parts of the course.  Improved steadily throughout the day until the afternoon when the temperature stayed around the low 70s.

The morning round on the Mount Kidd course seems to have been won by DP with a modest stableford score of 34.  Jet lag obviously in evidence amongst the party.  In the afternoon Richard romped round with 38 points on the Mount Lorette course to win that round and the day.

28th September

Weather:  Another very fine day.

A beautiful golf course to give a fitting golfing conclusion to the Freens' tour.  Unfortunately no Freen could rise to the occasion and the round was one by Allan Oliver with 37 points leaving 6 others tied on 31 and Graeme down at 24, but he had had a tough week.

Weather:  Like the day before, but much colder to start

After a good drive from Kananaskis Freens arrived at the legendary, if hairy, Banff Springs course.  It was b….y cold.  So much so in fact that the first 9 was not ready for play, so a start was made on the 10th (longish short hole set beside a bend of the river - cold balls, cold clubs, cold hands - no more need be said!)

In fact it probably has to be said that Barney won the single round with a score of 32 and there was no close second.

Weather: Beautiful, warm day

This was a golf/housing development set on hills a few miles from Kelowna. It aroused mixed feelings in the Freens, principally on account of the quickish putting surfaces.  The scribe thought it was brilliant.  Interesting holes, fine views and a delightful piece of countryside.  Buggies used by all for the first time on the trip.

Richard devastated the field with 42 points, 6 ahead of Allan and 9 ahead of Barney in third place.

Weather: Beautiful, warm day - again

The shot that rang round the world!  Or did it?  This is a picture of the scene and the lines of the shots, but controversy lurks and Cubic may not have found the key to a fortune!!

Phil may have had an eagle, but he still finished much closer to the bottom of the field than the top.  Barney and Doug Mulholland shared the honours on 40 points.

Harvest

 & Gallagher's Canyon

Lowlights

Weather: Not as sunny as last two days, but still pleasant and warm.

Barney made a mistake to-day.  He chose to play only one round and it was at Harvest rather than Gallagher's.  A guest, Tim, came in with 37 points at Harvest ahead of Richard on 34.  Freens were nowhere.

At Gallagher's another guest, Bill, took the money with 38, with Allan a point behind and Doug M and DP joint third on 34.

Weather:  Distinctly hot day.

Drive to the south to a typical American (very hilly) course where buggies were essential for all flagging Freens.  Advice given not to pursue balls into rough in order not to irritate the local rattlesnakes.  Freens attain new levels of accuracy!

This course was clearly to Barney's liking - not a wheenge all day and 37 points ahead of DK and JM on 28.

“Official” outings continue below

Barney and the Doctor not managing to play two rounds (although for different reasons) No others really. None Barney's announcement that he is a Grandad-to-be New guest, Tom Timmins. Traditional high tea Two courses Price for two courses The courses and their hills JM deciding that carrying Dick H's clubs was preferable to having to give him the kiss of life. Has to be scenery again.  There can't be any more beautiful places in the world to play golf (apart from Dunbar etc., of course.) Herd of elk crossing the course in front of Freens and then swimming the river. Quality of golf secondary. None Introduction of Allan Oliver to Freens Excellent putting surfaces and interesting holes Comfortable European victory in the Ryder Cup at the K Club in Ireland. Priciest Canadian course and the pre-golf provisions were the poorest. Having to turn back to Kananaskis after about half an hour's drive to retrieve the jacket somebody had left behind - no prizes for guessing who the eejit was None Are you kidding? None! Golf very enjoyable, but day topped off with visit to vineyards and meal on balcony as sun goes down over mountains in middle distance in beautiful clear sky. Scotland is not the only place for them - see first low below. Distinctly grumpy pro - mustn't have been a Canadian, but didn't seem to be Scottish either. The Hon. Secretary has recorded that scores were not valid as Portrush and Ballyliffin were played!

Managing two rounds on two of the world’s hardest courses; Eck birdieing world’s hardest Par 5; Charming locals - refreshing; Another wedding revealing new set of local beauties; Local music in pub Dick mislaying large wad of notes (but charming and honest locals returning it intact!); Monsoon of biblical proportions!
